Question Number: 15366

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 5/3/2007

RE: Metro Youth Soccer Leauge New Jersey Under 16

Antoni Kata of Wallington, NJ USA asks...

Hi, in the last game a slide tackle occurred. This player slide tackled another one using both legs. He got the ball and now foul was called. Please tell me if the Ref. was wrong or explain to me why he was correct.

Thank You, Antoni Kata

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

I bet the slide tackler claimed, "I got the ball ref!" My answer would be, "Yes, and then you got the player."

Just because a player touches the ball, that doesn't mean she's immune from fouling. The referee judges what happens after the ball is played to see if it is a foul or not.

I sincerely hope that when you described the slide tackler "using both legs" you didn't mean he came in with both legs extended toward the opponent. That can be a very dangerous situation, as the player has absolutely no control of himself, and his full body mass is behind the potential collision. Any player coming lunging/jumping in like that should be sent off and shown the red card.
