Question Number: 15415

Law 7 - Match Duration 5/7/2007

RE: Select Under 19

EM Pearson of Medina, TN USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 15326

I am in total agreement with Chuck Fleischer; his answer is simple and to the point. [15326]

I referee many tournaments with instructions not to add time to matches. I always ignore those instructions. The addition of time is a very valuable tool in the referee tool kit to keep matches under control. When the team leading by one goal is substituting every minute or taking pointless shots over the goal line this leads to great frustration on the part of opposing players. The ability to say, "Don't worry, guys, take a break. I'm adding every time they do it," and pat your watch as you say it-- this is truly invaluable in many games. Then when you announce five minutes added time at the end of regulation it seems to keep everyone cool on the field.

And you know what? I've never had a match protested on this basis, and I always seem to be invited back to those tournaments.

Thanks.
