Question Number: 15421

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 5/8/2007

RE: Rec Under 13

Brian of Baltimore, MD USA asks...

If the goal keeper from Team A has possession of the ball in thier hands, after a save, and then a player from the opposing team jumps at the ball when the keeper is trying to kick the ball. What action does the ref. take? Yellow card or first verbally warn the player. What is the restart? IFK?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

The referee stops play and restarts either indirect free kick for failing to allow the goalkeeper to release the ball from her hands or direct free kick for jumping at the opponent.

If the decision is jumping at the opponent to what degree was the jump? Was it careless [free kick], reckless [free kick and caution] or excessively forceful [free kick and a sending-off].

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

The referee stops play and awards and indirect free kick to the goalkeeper's team as the opponent has interefered with the goalkeeper's releasing the ball into play. This could also be a direct kick if the referee deemed the opponent was also guilty of jumping at the goalkeeper - in which case the more serious offense takes precedence.

Depending on how this action was done a card may be in order, but possibly not.
