Question Number: 15426

Law 5 - The Referee 5/8/2007

RE: Premier Under 16

George of Albany, NY USA asks...

When you file a report on a coach using foul language after a match, do you write the exact words, or do you use a euphemism or generality (f-bomb, obscenity, etc.?) This was within earshot of players and fans, and the competition authority needs to discipline this guy. It just seems wrong to disgrace a USSF form with such ugliness.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Disgrace the form, quote exactly what he said, try to describe his face, his color, his demeanor and everything else that will paint a picture of him the way he was. Then write this on the envelope:

"Warning Contains Adult Language"

seal the report in that envelope and insert it into another envelope for mailing. This will advise those with weak stomachs not to look. At that point you're off the hook. Note when quoting another you are not using your words, only his!

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

Write down exactly what was said. For, if you write "the player said a bad word", the league may not deem this enough evidence to support a suspension if there was an appeal. So, ensure that the player gets the proper justice and write down what was said verbatim. Follow Ref Fleischer's advice about a nice little disclaimer on the envelope and you'll be fine.
