Question Number: 15428Law 3 - Number of Players 5/8/2007RE: school Under 14 Daniel Robinson of Shelbyville, KY United States asks...At a recent tournament, team A threw in the ball after the referee allowed team B to substitute (illegally). Team A scored wihtin a minute. After the goal was scored, the referee called an illegal sub, negated he goal and made team A rethrow the ball. Is this the correct call since the play had stopped? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Why in the world would the referee compound errors like this? No need to give that man a shovel, he gets himself into deep enough holes on his own.
Now, did the ref attempt to keep team A from putting the ball into play while he reversed his error in allowing the sub? And the player from A didn't listen, but took off for the goal anyway? In that case, the ref would be entirely correct to bring everything back, correct the illegal sub, and retake the throw.

A substitution is made, play restarts, a goal is scored, the referee finds out he screwed up, he starts making things up to unscrew himself, he shoots himself in the foot, falls on his sword and irritates Superman all at once. Isn't this just wonderful.
So he made a mistake, fix it and get on with things. UNLESS he told the throwing team to wait... If that happened all is well, he's right. Now if what happened is what we think happened protest the incorrect application of Law and replay the match.
Sorry,
