League Specific 5/11/2007

RE: level3 Under 6

Julie of Belleville, ontario canada asks...

If there is a hand ball at any part of the game is a indirect or direct kick award. Many ref's tell me its direct but i get into the field and coaches yell at me and tell me its indirect!!!
CONFUSED!!!

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Hi Julie. Deliberately handling the ball, except by a keeper in his own penalty area, is and always has been one of the 10 direct kick fouls.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Ref Contarino is correct, handling is one of the 10 penal fouls, and apart from modifications for small-sided games, it is a DFK/PK. The confusion may come from your local league rules. Many U-little competitions provide that all free kicks shall be indirect.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Julie deliberately handling the ball may be direct of indirect, if the keeper does it inside his own penalty area in one four prohibited ways mentioned in Law 12 it is indirect. In all other cases the restart is direct.

At the age group you speak of league boards get involved and sometimes change all free kicks to indirect even though, under the Laws of the Game, it may not be done.

Regards
