Law 14 - Penalty kick 5/29/2007

RE: Competive Adult

Cory of Menifee, California U.S.A. asks...

Well this has actually never happened to me but i have always wondered if a player taking a penaty kick can feint to psyche out the keeper and then take the kick in the opposite direction.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

They can as long as referee does not consider it unsporting. They are entitled to feint on a PK, but they must not unecessarly delay the game.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Ho Cory,
as a type of free kick it is ok to do so but there are qualifications on how it is to be done as there are restrictions on a PK some of which are not present on other free kicks
Such things as a single designated kicker, waiting for a referee signal to begin, ball must move forward !

It remains an opinion of the referee but USB action COULD be considered against the pk kicker if he trys to unfairly trick the opponent's into encroachment or the keeper to moving off the goal line. That is why a series of stop and start run ups is not generally accepted or moving past the ball and then returning.
