Question Number: 15668Law 11 - Offside 6/1/2007RE: Rec Adult Rich of State College, PA USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 15629 What if the STL defender intentionally plays the ball, but fails to control it, and it gets behind him/her to the player in the offside position? Does that count as a deflection, or would the defender be considered the last to play the ball? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol That's why referees get paid the big bucks (that was a joke), because we get to make these split-second important decisions. "Intentionally plays, but fails to control" - we have to decide whether that was a deflection or a mistake. Half the people there aren't going to like our answer ...

View Referee Gary Voshol profileAnswer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer Trouble is, for half the people this decision is going to vary from one referee to the next. The referee must be there, see the attempt to play/deflection and make an instantaneous decision.
