Law 17 - Corner Kick 6/5/2007

RE: amatuer Adult

robert goad of london, england asks...

what decision would the referee give if a goalkeeper took a goalkick and the ball went outside the penalty area only to be hit by a big gust of wind that blew the ball back into the keepers net without touching another outfield player or the goalkeeper himself.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

It would be a corner kick for the other team.

Law 16 tells us, "A goal may be scored directly from a goal kick, but only against the opposing team."

The keeper who last touched the ball is on the defending team, and a goal was not scored because it did not touch any other player first. That fits the definition of a corner kick in Law 17: "A corner kick is awarded when: the whole of the ball, having last touched a player of the defending team, passes over the goal line, either on the ground or in the air, and a goal is not scored in accordance with Law 10."

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

Corner kick to the other team. Note that the ball must have left penalty area to be in play. A goal may not be scored directly against yourself on a goal kick or corner kick.
