Question Number: 15933League Specific 7/3/2007RE: rec Under 14 John Mccullough of Shelton, WA Mason asks...can a player kick the ball over his own head and the ball goes 5 to 10ft behind him
our rules states no high kicks
the ref allowed this to happen several times Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol At U14 you still have a "No high kicks" rule? Why?
The Laws of the Game already take care of this. It is an offense called Playing In A Dangerous Manner. It requires a player doing something dangerous to himself or another person, and a nearby opponent who is disadvantaged by it so he has to pull back from play to avoid the potential danger.
Simply having a high kick is not necessarily dangerous. If there's no opposing body nearby, what made it dangerous? Perhaps the referee you had that day recognized that no harm was done, so he didn't make a call. Now if your local rules really say "No high kicks", then once determining "What is High?" the ref should have made a call. We have to follow the rules of the competition when we accept games in that league. Even if the rules don't make sense.
