Question Number: 15941

Law 11 - Offside 7/4/2007

RE: Under 15

Kyle Kenney of Ontario, Canada asks...

A ball is kicked to a player in an offside position, he realizes that he's in an offside position and doesn't attempt to play the ball and backs away.

A defender comes along and plays the ball, then the attacker comes to challenge and play the ball from him.

Is this an offside?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Kyle you are thinking like a lawyer, offside isn't all that complicated. Once the ball is touched by a team mate an offside positioned player can not get involved until one of a number of things happen.

First, the ball is again touched by his team and he, by then, has achieved a position that is no longer offside.

Second, an opponent intentionally plays or gains control of the ball

Third, the ball is no longer in play.

Your questions seem to revolve around the time delay between when an opponent gains possession and when the offside positioned player jumps him. What you should be asking yourself is: was the opponent disadvantaged by a player who can not get involved?

Regards,
