" If a direct or indirect free kick is kicked directly into a team's own goal, a corner kick is awarded to the opposing team "
Why is this rule in place? If you score on yourself, that's just too bad.
Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol The restart is a corner kick because you are not allowed to score against yourself on any free kick.
