Kyle Kenney of Ontario, Canada asks...

Law 13 states..

" If a direct or indirect free kick is kicked directly into a team's own goal, a corner kick is awarded to the opposing team "

Why is this rule in place?
If you score on yourself, that's just too bad.

The restart is a corner kick because you are not allowed to score against yourself on any free kick.

Its the laws. It also eleviates the problem of a petulant 14 year old who is annoyed with a team mate or a coach etc from turning around and kicking the ball into his own net. This is how i view it.

Short and only answer is, that's the way it is. In the Spirit of this game, FIFA decided a long time ago that no team may score upon itself at ANY restart.

This is what FIFA have decided. Corner kick is the restart because the ball crossed the goal line and a goal was not scored in accrodance with the laws.
