Question Number: 16025

Law 11 - Offside 7/13/2007

RE: Level 3 Adult

Craig Randle of Vancouver B.C., B.C. Canada asks...

Hi guys.. just wondering how you would justify an offside call when the play is moving upfield and the last player on the defence is beaten by a ball that is headed off his own team- another defencman. This happend in the U-20 World cup game between Canada and somebody and they ruled it offside. The referee did not even talk to his linesman, as I would have done, and ruled the play offside, yet the TV replay showed that the canadian player was onside and scored a perfectly clean goal. I know this is hard to judge, but when is a player offside when no one from his own team has touched the ball? Thanks-Craig

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Hi Craig. Didn't see the match. In answer to your question "When is a player offside when no one from his own team has touched the ball?" that would be never. Referee must have thought the ball hit a teammate is my only explanation.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

Offside is judged at the moment the ball touches a teammate. Thus no touch of teammate...NO OFFSIDE. It is as simple as that.
