Question Number: 16046

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 7/16/2007

RE: Rec Adult

Josh Resnik of Minneapolis, MN USA asks...

If a ball is thrown in, hits off the goalie's hands (and touches no other players) and goes into the goal, is the thrower awarded a goal?

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

Depends on the policies for that league and who is keeping track of stats. Usually the player to last touch the ball on attack gets credit. As a referee, I am not worried about this.

Not a referees job, referee just awards the goal. At higher levels this gets given to Dubious Goals committee to decide.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

My colleagues have refered you to the statistician to see who gets credit for the goal.

It occurs to me that you may be asking if the goal counts. It does, provided the referee is alert enough to recognize advantage. The goalkeeper may not handle a ball directly thrown in to him by a teammate. If he does, the referee stops play and awards an indirect free kick to the opponents. But if the referee applies advantage, he will be able to see the ball roll into the net, and the goal counts. It wasn't scored directly off a throw-in, because the keeper (who is a player) touched it.
