Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino That a player, substitute, or substituted player has been sent-off for violating one of the 7 sending-off offenses listed in Law 12. The individual who is sent-off and shown the red card must leave the field and its immediate surroundings and they may not return to participate or interfere in the match anymore.
In other American sports this is commonly known as an "ejection". One big difference between ejections "US" sports and soccer is that if a player is shown a red card, he may not be replaced by his team. In the other sports you may replace an ejected player on the field.
