Question Number: 16188

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 8/2/2007

RE: Under 15

Jim of sydney, nsw Australia asks...

A defender reaches out with his hand to stop a goal, the defender then handballs it and stops it going into the goal. the ball then falls directly to an attackers foot who kicks the ball into the goal. what should the ref do? should the red card still be given?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

The wise ref will wait a moment before whistling for the deliberate handling to see if there is any advantage to be applied. If the ball then goes in, he awards the goal. If the ref is too quick on his whistle, play is stopped and the goal cannot count.

The defender should be cautioned and shown the yellow card for his attempt to deny the goal. Since the goal was counted, it was not denied by the handling, so there would be no red card.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

The smart referee will wait a few seconds before blowing his whistle, give advantage, award a goal, caution the defender for unsporting behavior and restart with a kick-off. The foolish referee would blow his whistlee immediately seeing the handling violation, send off the defender for denying a goal by deliberately handling the ball and restart with a penalty kick. It's far better to award the goal. Good example of why NOT to immediately blow your whistle upon seeing a foul
