Question Number: 16267Law 15 - Throw In 8/11/2007RE: amateur Other cedric hutchison of germiston, gauteng republic of south africa asks...When throwing the ball in from the touchline it is thrown directly into the opponents goal without any player touching the ball since a goal cannot be scored directly from a throw in what happens next? Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer Hi Cedric. What the referee needs to remember in regard to this is the definition of a goal kick or a corner kick. After crossing the goal line and having been touched by whoever Laws 16 & 17 follow with this statement: and a goal is not scored in accordance with Law 10. Clearly the Law tells us, because a goal cannot scored, the restart of play is goal kick. Conversely, when you throw it into your own goal the restart is corner kick.

View Referee Chuck Fleischer profileAnswer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Hi Cedric, within the laws of soccer on the throw in restart, it prevents the scoring of a *DIRECT*goal against either team . As you correctly note on the throw in leading to a goal if the ball crosses the goal line under the crossbar and between the posts without touching any player from either team no goal is allowed. The ball is in play once it crosses the touchline and since it goes out of play once it recrosses the goal line the restart is based on who last touched the ball. That would be who took the throw in. Thus a ball into the opposition goal on a direct throw -in is a GOAL KICK restart. A ball on a direct throw -in into your own goal is a Corner KIck! Cheers

Thus ball leaves the field over the goal line last touched by an attacking player. We know it can't be a goal, since one cannot be scored directly from a throw-in without an intervening touch, as you correctly noted. Ergo, next we restart with a goal kick.
