Question Number: 16282

Law 14 - Penalty kick 8/12/2007

RE: Adult

joe of belfast, ireland asks...

if you take a penalty during normal time and it comes back off the posts, can you tap it back in yourself or does it have to hit a player

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Joe,
if the ball only rebounds of the post or crossbar as the pk kicker you are restricted from playing (touching) that ball. Do do so is an INDFK out for your opponent's.
The keeper or one of any of the other 2o players on the field must first get a touch before you can redeem yourself for missing in the first place!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

The kicker cannot touch the ball twice. Here the kicker touched it twice so the restart is IFK at spot of second touching.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

It has to touch another player before you can legally play it again. If you can't stop your reaction, it will be an IDFK for the other team. Tempting, though, isn't it?
