Question Number: 16306

League Specific 8/14/2007

RE: rec Other

andrew crews of shelby twp, michigan united states asks...

Is it true that a referee is alowed to show card to a coach in the united soccer leauge? I am a referee in the AYSO and we are not allowed to do this and are coaches shown cards in HS matches?
Thank You
Andrew

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Andrew, I'm not acquainted with the United Soccer League, but I see that it is part of M(ichigan)SYSA. Last year at the annual general meeting, MSYSA passed a proposal that provides for showing cards to coaches in youth soccer leagues under MSYSA. AYSO is not under that umbrella; they report nationally to USSF not through the State YSA's.

In HS I believe cards are shown to coaches.

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

United Soccer Leagues (USL) is a professional soccer league in the USA and Canada with 2 men's professional flights, a woman's and men's amateur division, and the Super 20 and Super Y leagues (youth).

All of these leagues must abide by the USSF and FIFA laws of the game. Those codes do not permit cards to be shown to coaches.

I have just been informed that there is a local youth league in Michigan called the "united soccer league".

If that is the league you're talking about, then I suggest that you check with that leagues by-laws. Their rules of competition should indicate if cards should be shown to coaches.
