Question Number: 16368Law 11 - Offside 8/19/2007RE: Adult Rabbi of Barisal, Bangladesh asks...Is offside possible when free kick taken outside the goal keeper area (in front of goal post)? It's urgent. Please reply me quickly. Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney Yes. Offside is always possible on a free kick. From your description, it is impossible to tell which direction the free kick will be taken. If by goalkeeper area you mean the penalty area, and the kick is going in, if an attacking player is closer to the goal line than the second to last defender and the ball then they are in an offside position, and if they become involved in the play from the kick, they are offside. If from in front of the goal post, but outside the goal area, which I assume means the kick is going out, all of the opposing team must be outside of the penalty area and at least 10 yards away from the ball. If the ball is kicked to a teammate who is in an offside position in the opponents' half of the field then that player is offside if he becomes involved in play.
