Question Number: 16413

Law 4 - Players Equipment 8/24/2007

RE: Varsity High School

Chris of Saint Albans, Vermont USA asks...

I am roughly 6 feet 6 inches tall and wear large Nike guards that are 8.25 inches long. Is this an appropriate ratio between my height and my shin guard length? Thanks

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Chris when I did a quick measurement of my shin and applied the guidelines in the American high school rules 8.25" was right for me. I'm 10" shorter than you! Now, we arrive at a quandary -- do you have the largest shinguards money can buy? If not, get some larger ones.

High school rules require the shinguard not be altered to decrease protection. Further they are to be placed not more than 2" above the ankle. They are to, and this is the killer, provide reasonable protection.

This is in the opinion of the referee! There you have it, there are going to be differing opinions in whether or not a shinguard that's adequate for me is adequate for you. Big problem! Best I can offer is get the biggest money can buy and wear them or at least have them in your bag in case you get a referee that has an opinion differing from the norm.

Regards,
