Question Number: 16435Law 3 - Number of Players 8/26/2007RE: Rec Under 13 Maggie Zajac of Hamilton, Ontario Canada asks...Is every captain of a soccer team, number 12???
tanks Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller No. Most times the captains will wear the special arm band. Nothing says they have to be number 12.

View Referee Ben Mueller profileAnswer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer The team's captain is usually based on leadership ability as well as the player's skill. It has nothing to do with her jersey number.
In America it is usually impossible to assign a number to the captain because of the number of captains coaches send out. Having them all number 12 might cause problems.
I have seen as many as five captains! I only accepted the one though some referees seem content to have more than just the one. The word captain is only mentioned in three places in the Laws of the Game, twice in Kicks from the Penalty Mark and once in the Law 12 section of Additional Instructions and Guidance. In these three locations the word "captain" is singular NOT plural.
