Question Number: 16443Law 11 - Offside 8/26/2007RE: Professional Colin of Yantai, China asks...I saw an EPL match recently and offside was given in this situation.........
Attacker 1 is in an offside position, so attacker 2 plays the ball backwards in an attempt to find attacker 3. But the ball rebounded of a defender (15 away) and went towards attacker 1.
In my opinion it shouldn't have been offside, because it wasn't a deflection. It was because the defender didn't/couldn't react quick enough to control the ball. Is this all about ITOOTR? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol It is all about In The Opinion Of The Referee. My opinion is that rebound and deflection are pretty much the same thing. I'd have to see the play to be sure, of course.
