Law 15 - Throw In 9/3/2007

RE: rec Under 15

will dawson of truckee, ca usa asks...

Is there a rule on the ball spinning on a throw in? When i was a kid the ball couldn't spin or it was deemed illegal. I guess the ball didn't come straight over the head. is this really a rule, or just the best way to do a throw in?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

"Spin is no sin."

This was a myth of the game back when you were a kid, and it remains a myth of the game today.

The fact that the ball happens to spin only indicates that one hand touched the ball slightly longer than the other - not that the throw was illegal.

You are correct that both hands have to be used when taking a throw-in, and that the ball must come from behind and over the head.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

The laws state nothing about spin on a throw in. If all requierments are met and the ball spins (then its ok).
