Question Number: 16582League Specific 9/7/2007RE: Under 17 Damon of arusha, tanzania asks...What is the policy on playing with a cast? I broke my hand and a big game for our school is coming up. I have seen professionals play with thier casts wrapped up, should I do that? Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino Well are you the goalkeeper? You probably shouldn't play if you're a goalkeeper with a broken hand.
Otherwise, it is up to the referee to determine whether or not the cast you are playing with is either dangerous to yourself or to other players. It is important to remember that it's the referee's opinion that will dictate this answer, so if he says "no, sorry, you can't play with a cast" - you will happily accept his decision and not protest, riiiiight?

View Referee Steve Montanino profileAnswer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney Damon, it depends on what your local rules have to say about casts and whether they are allowed, first of all. Second, and most important of all, the referee must decide whether your cast is a danger to you or the other players and allow it or not - local rules or not - the referee has the final say. Some referees may allow it, but give you notice that if they see you using it as a weapon, you get to go sit down - permission to play revoked. Remember that professional players get paid bucks to play, so playing hurt is sometimes necessary - but for you, it is not, so I wouldn't, so you can be back on the field healthy sooner. Best wishes.
