Question Number: 16658

Law 11 - Offside 9/12/2007

RE: Competitive Under 15

Russ of Manchester, CT USA asks...

The goalie rushes out to meet an attack by two opposing players leaving a defender behind him. The attacking player sends the ball past the goalie to his teammate who is at that point between the goalie and the last defender. Is that an offside pass?

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

Yes. The goalkeeper becomes the second to last opponent when he crosses his defender. The attacker was closer to the goal line than the second to last opponent at the moment the ball was played by his teammate.

Remember law 11 says 'second to last opponent', because it is clearer than saying defender. Although, even if it did say defender it would still be correct, because the goalkeeper is a defender 99.9% of the time.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Offside is simple, if you're in their half and ahead of the ball you gotta have two of them between you and their goal line or be even with the last two of them. In this case you weren't, so offside is correct.

Regards,
