Question Number: 16668

Law 4 - Players Equipment 9/12/2007

RE: recreational Under 12

Sean Pidgeon of Montreal, Quebec Canada asks...

Would a small diamond nose stud be considered jewelry ?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Let's see, a small metal and crystal thing worn in the nose for adornment that is totally unnecessary to the playing of the match is that jewellery? Let's see??

How about putting it this way, the ball with lots of spin on it and coming at pace hits the nose of the person wearing this and rips it out creating a huge hole and lots of blood. Is that dangerous? Is that possible?

You have got to be kidding. Really! You have got to be kidding. It is jewellery and it is dangerous. You may wear it and watch or you can take it out and play -- you choose. I really have nothing more to say.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Oh, for heaven's sake! Such an item is bought in jewelry stores, worn as jewelry, looks like jewelry - I'd say it was jewelry. Besides, it clearly can cause injury to the wearer and perhaps even to other players, which is why no jewelry is allowed, after all.
