Question Number: 16703Law 5 - The Referee 9/15/2007RE: competitive Under 16 James Lieurance of Olathe, Ks USA asks...At the conclusion of a recent game all players were off the field. The referee walked by and heard one player comment "the referee needs to get his eyes checked". The referee took offense to this and issued the player a yellow card. I was under the impression that since the game was over and all players were off the field the referee exceeded their authority and should have notified the teams coach so sportmanship could be addressed? Am I incorrect? Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer If the referee considers the remark unsporting or insulting he is permitted to mention it in his match report. Once he has left the field he should not show cards.
Regards,

He may, however, caution or send-off any player still in the vicinity, write that in his report and the player will be subject to the same penalties as if it had happened on the field
