Question Number: 16806

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/20/2007

RE: Competive Under 13

Bill Thorrington of Perkasie, Pa USA asks...

If an offensive player is Charged in the Penalty Area and she is dribbling away from the goal, is it a PK or a Free Kick from the spot of the foul?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Charging is not a foul in and of itself. If a player is charged in at least a careless manner the player doing the charging has committed one of the 10 penal fouls and if committed within the penalty area will result in a penalty kick being taken by the opposing team. It matters not what direction the ball or players are going, only that it occured in the penalty area

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

If a player is charged in a careless, reckeless, or excessive way then the penalty for this would be... a PENALTY! Any, and I mean ANY direct free kick offense committed within a defenders own penalty area MUST be punished with a penalty kick, regardless of the direction of the ball.
