Question Number: 16816League Specific 9/21/2007RE: select Under 16 scott sullivan of dublin, ireland asks...i was wondering how old you have to be to be able to ref in europe, england etc..im a soccer referee and only 15 years old and have a dream to ref at the highest level Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer A referee advances up the food chain based on ability, age and the number of matches done, this being up to the national organisation concerned. Sometimes advancement is based on other things like waivers of age and experience and ability though not often. So as many matches at the highest level possible and get noticed. If you're noticed by the right folks in the right light you'll advance.

You need to find yourself a mentor who understands what it is you want and works with you to seize the opportunity. Being physically fit and run forever, understand the laws of the game and the spirit upon which they are based! Recognize the fouls and when your being played. The mechanics positioning are all teachable things. You must look inside to see what sacrifices of time and effort to truly get to your destination. The game is a game and to have fun when there is pressure to perform well is always a struggle with the character of who you as a person work out to be. You cannot referee without ego nor can you survive with a chip on your shoulder. If there is one word that sums up those I know at the highest levels it is the word **integrity** for it personifies the true character of those with a backbone to endure and the heart to persevere! Cheers
