Question Number: 16823

Law 4 - Players Equipment 9/21/2007

RE: Competive High School

Zalina McGuire of Norwood, MA USA asks...

Can two playes wear the same number while playing at the same time on the field.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Are they on the same team? If so, NFHS rules don't allow players on the same team to have the same number. If you're talking about youth teams or adult teams playing under USSF, it's not a huge problem, since numbers aren't required by the Laws of the Game, if the referee knows about the number duplication beforehand and there is some way to easily tell the players apart. It's another good reason why referees should carefully check players in before the match to catch such issues. One might wish to check the local rules, as they sometimes do have number on jersey requirements the referee should be aware of and is required to enforce.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

As my colleague Ref Maloney points out the requirements are stipulated in some leagues. Easy fix if there are restrictions speaking as a coach a strip of tape will set the number issue right, turn an 11 into 111. cheers
