Question Number: 16880

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/24/2007

RE: REC Under 13

Soccerlover of monreo, washington usa asks...

can a player pass the ball to the goalkeeper in any way or is a penaltie? also what is pushing like i know with your hands but i used my shoulder or what ever with my arm strait down and tghey called pushing!!

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Anyone may pass the ball to the goalkeeper in any legal manner. However, Law 12 says it is an indirect free kick offense if the goalkeeper handles a ball that has been deliberately kicked to him by a teammate. It is not a penalty kick - never ever can a PK be given against a goalkeeper for using his hands inside his own penalty area.

As for pushing, if you lead with your shoulder it is not fair play. Whether the referee calls that a push or a strike or an unfair charge, the result is the same - a direct free kick for your opponents.
