Question Number: 16930Law 11 - Offside 9/27/2007RE: College John of Madrid, NY USA asks......A1 is in an offside position. Teammate A2 makes pass towards A1. Pass is intercepted and controlled by defender B1. A1 enters play and steals ball from B1. OFFSIDE?? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol It depends on whether A1 interfered with B1. If so, offside. If not, a gift from B1 to A1, as you said B1 "controlled" the ball. Once the B team controls the ball, the offside considerations go away from A and begin for B.

If, in the opinion of the referee, A1 gained an advantage by being in offside position in that he immediately capitalized by being in that position, then it's offside. If A1 is say 5-10 yards from B1 and then runs over and steals the ball, I don't see how you could give offside.
