Question Number: 16931Law 11 - Offside 9/27/2007RE: Other Richard of Jefferson, TN Jefferson asks...If a player hits a shot or a pass that deflects off of a player on the other team and our striker is coming back from an offside position. Is he rendered offside if he turns and goes for the ball??? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol I believe you are asking if a deflection negates offside. It does not. Offside is reset on 3 conditions: - you are no longer in an offside position when a teammate next plays the ball - an opponent controls the ball - the ball goes out of play

So, if your player is in offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a teammate, he may not become actively involved in play until offside resets. Offside resets when an opponent gains control of the ball, the ball goes out of play, or the next time the ball is played or touched by a teammate.
