where should a defender stand when a ball is being thrown from the other end of the field?

Hi Kaeley,
that is more of a tactical decision your coach will want to make and that you as a player will have to learn through experiance!
A referee as a neutral official can not impart tactical information. Best thing I can say is deny the attackers space behind you and anticipate th need to find space to attack in front of you. Basically we divide the field into 3 parts (attacking 3rd, mid 3rd and defending 3rd) Generally we play as a team whithin the any one or part of two as a unit . Defenders generally move up towards the midline but remain aware to take what the oppositiongives you and be warey of the counter attack and offside opponents! Cheers
