Question Number: 17138

Law 4 - Players Equipment 10/6/2007

RE: Select Under 15

Dave Eberle of Clarkston, Washington USA asks...

Gum Chewing

What is your recommendation for select youth soccer players chewing gum during a game?

Our league does not have any policy about this. A coach who lets his players chew gum told me that it helps his players from getting a dry mouth.

My opinion is that chewing gum during play is a possible choking hazard. Please advise. Thank you.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Get a grip, Dave! They are not wearing the gum, they are only chewing it, and it does help prevent dry mouth. A referee who refuses to allow players to chew gum has blown his authority to the popping point. Are you also going to prevent them from playing if they have braces or wear wax on the braces or heaven forbid, rubber bands? What about retainers? I am exaggerating to make a point, I hope. It would not be wise for the referee to prevent the players from chewing their gum.
