Question Number: 17228

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/10/2007

RE: Rec Under 12

Tony Ooten of Powder Springs, GA United States asks...

The answers to 17191 mentioned Law 12 which I read to gain better understanding of the physical play which is and isn't allowed prior to a goal kick. I noticed the following on page 27 :

"Decisions of the International F.A. Board: A player using a deliberate trick to circumvent the Law while he is taking a free kick, is cautioned for unsporting behavior and shown the yellow card. The free kick is retaken."

What are some examples of such deliberate tricks?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

This refers to a player taking a free kick while kneeling or he uses his head to restart play in an attempt to allow the keeper to use his hands. Free kicks are in play when they are kicked and moved.

What I asked you to do is let your players know they can't: touch each other when the ball is not present, touch each other before touching the ball, hold each other, push each other, strike each other, trip each other or anything else involving the laying on of hands before the taking of a corner kick. I didn't expect you would actually read the Law or even look at another page. I am pleasantly surprised, thanks.

Regards,
