Question Number: 17244

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/11/2007

RE: Pro Professional

Vijayan Arland of Pune, Maharashtra India asks...

This question is a follow up to question 17160

1. Can the Ref give a red card to a player after the match is over? And if yes what kind of a senario it need be?

2. Can the ref give the Goalkeeper a yellow card if the keeper has rolled the ball for a goal kick and the ball crossed the six yard box and he did not ask him to take a free kick again but directly awarded him with a card?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

1) The referee has authority from the time he enters the field until the time he leaves. This includes a player who commits a send-off offense immediately after the match, while everyone is still in the process of leaving the field. Usually the red card would not be shown. Instead the referee would inform the player, captains and or coaches that the offense will be noted in the referee's report.

2) I'm not sure I understand your question. If the referee thought that the goalkeeper was wasting time, he could be cautioned. Or there could have been another offense that the goalkeeper committed.
