Law 17 - Corner Kick 10/13/2007

RE: Any College

Seth Holtzman of bala-cynwyd, pa USA asks...

If the striker shoots at the goal, the goalie then parries the shot aside, the ball then hits the goal post and proceeds to go out of bounds. What is the outcome of this series of events? Is it a goal kick or a corner?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Seth,
ask yourself
WHO LAST touched the ball before it left the playing field??

A corner kick is awarded when:
? the whole of the ball, having last touched a player of the defending
team, passes over the goal line, either on the ground or in the
air, and a goal is not scored in accordance with Law 10

A goal kick is awarded when:
? the whole of the ball, having last touched a player of the attacking
team, passes over the goal line, either on the ground or in the air,
and a goal is not scored in accordance with Law 10

Was it not the keeper?

Then the opponents recieve a corner kick!
Cheers

A corner kick is awarded whenever the ball goes over the goal line either on the ground or in the air ,does not score a goal, and is last touched by a player on the defending team.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Since the goalkeeper was the last human player to touch it, it is a corner kick. The goal post doesn't count, unless it knocked it into the goal instead of off the field. If the ball is saved by the keeper, hits the post and goes in, it's a goal! But in your case, it's a corner kick.
