Question Number: 17304

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/14/2007

RE: competitive High School

Darren Boynton of Saco, Maine USA asks...

Is a slide tackle from behind an automatic yellow card regardless if the tackling player got ball?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Darren,
very few things are automatic and while slide tackles from behind are generally a risky manuver there are those who can poke a ball free in a non lethal way where no foul is even present . The referee sees what he sees and decides what he decides, as a match condition you adapt and live with it as an equally applied facet of the game! ANY tackle which endagers an opponent requires sanctioning but as in most things always and never rarely come in to it!
cheers

This is another myth now being propagated by those that are cluless.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Simple answer: No. A slide tackle, if executed correctly, is a thing of beauty and a great defense tactic and perfectly legal play. Executed incorrectly, it can be a offense for which a free kick is given and perhaps even a misconduct of either the yellow or red persuasion, depending on the force used.
