Question Number: 17401

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/20/2007

RE: Rec Under 13

Bob of Long Beach, CA USA asks...

When a player slides into our keeper who has dived on the ball and kicks him the ref awards a Direct free kick. From where is the kick taken? spot of foul? or out to the 6 yd area line?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

If this happens inside the penalty area the referee should award a direct free kick to be taken from the point of the offence. If in the goal area the direct free kick is taken from the point nearest the infraction on the long line of the goal area.

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Bob,
if you read (law 13)
ANY free kick be it a DFK or INDFK that occurs in favour of the defending team within their own goal area can be placed ANYWHERE within that goal area, the same as a goal kick except offside criteria still apply! (goal kicks are exempt as are corners and throw ins from offside)

If it is a dfk offence against the defenders thus for the attacker of course it becomes a PK (law 14) and if it is an indfk against or any drop ball event then the ball is taken straight back to the outer edge of the 6 yard goal line. NO restart can occur against a team closer than 6 yards away from their goal. This is stated in (law 8) special circumstances

QUOTE FIFA LAW 8 THE START AND RESTART OF PLAY
" Special Circumstances
A free kick awarded to the defending team inside its own goal area is
taken from any point within the goal area.

An indirect free kick awarded to the attacking team in its opponents?
goal area is taken from the goal area line parallel to the goal line at
the point nearest to where the infringement occurred.

A dropped ball to restart the match after play has been temporarily
stopped inside the goal area takes place on the goal area line parallel
to the goal line at the point nearest to where the ball was located
when play was stopped."
END QUOTE

QUOTE FIFA LAW 13 FREE KICKS
"Position of Free Kick
Free Kick Inside the Penalty Area
Direct or indirect free kick to the defending team:
? all opponents are at least 9.15 m (10 yds) from the ball
? all opponents remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in
play
? the ball is in play when it is kicked directly beyond the penalty
area
? a free kick awarded in the goal area is taken from any point inside
that area

Indirect free kick to the attacking team:
? all opponents are at least 9.15 m (10 yds) from the ball until it is
in play, unless they are on their own goal line between the goalposts
? the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves
? an indirect free kick awarded inside the goal area is taken from
that part of the goal area line which runs parallel to the goal line,
at the point nearest to where the infringement occurred"
END QUOTE

QUOTE FIFA LAW 14 ? THE PENALTY KICK
"A penalty kick is awarded against a team that commits one of the ten offences for which a direct free kick is awarded, inside its own penalty area and while the ball is in play."
END QUOTE
Cheers
