Question Number: 17522

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/26/2007

RE: Rec High School

Steve Cerretani of Howell, NJ USA asks...

The ref called tripping and awarded us an INDIRECT kick. He's a friend, so after the game I reminded him that a trip is a DIRECT kick. He said it's up to the ref's discretion as to whether it's direct or indirect based on the severity of the trip. I never heard of this. Obviously, I think he's wrong. Any trip is a direct kick.
Thanks

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Steve,
you are 100% spot on! Your mate on the otherhand is a mythizer and outright bad egg in the refereeing community to even say it in jest never mind that he actually belives it! The nature of the foul is careless, reckless or excessive and it is the colour of a card that is discrestionary. Sigh! :o(
cheers

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Ah, high school referees in New Jersey. Been a topic of discussion elsewhere and most discussing feel on a scale of 1 to 10 many referees there measure well into the micro end of the scale. Right you are Steve. Show this to the "referee" and set him straight.

Regards,
