Question Number: 17579

Law 5 - The Referee 10/28/2007

RE: recreational Other

bob sales of Montebello, CA USA asks...

Has it ever been heard of that a referee puts on a pinny to distinguish himself from the players that have yellow or gold jerseys because the only color he has is gold?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

At the recreational level I have seen street clothes and sandles so a pinnie is hardly surprising. While it would be nice for a referee to have MORE than a single colour uniform or the teams have other coloured jerseys if it was the ONLY way so be it!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

It's been done. We tell and tell the recreational leagues that the first color the refs buy is yellow, so please please don't order yellow shirts for your teams. They do it anyway.

After the ref gets a bit of experience, and has earned a bit of money, she may begin getting more advanced games from the assignor. When that happens, she should be buying the alternate colors of ref shirts. Which alternates are purchased first depends on your local situation. Do clubs in your area wear red? Then the red ref shirt won't be used much, so perhaps blue or black is the better choice.
