Question Number: 17705

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 11/5/2007

RE: Under 19

Bill B of Babylon, NY USA asks...

On a free kick, can a defending player in the "wall" jump straight up and down (without infringing on the 10 yds)at the moment the ball is kicked? Recently, we were the beneficiaries of such an "infraction" and I can honestly say I've never in my life seen that call. Encroaching on the 10 yds is definitely worthy of a re-kick, but jumping straight up and down? What's the call?

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

If the defenders are at least 10 yards away from the ball, I don't see any problem with it. I wouldn't allow them to be yelling and screaming, but I have no issue with jumping up and down. Play on!

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Many teams are doing that, nothing new. Watch closely because when they start jumping they encroach. If they affect the free kick after moving toward the ball you're going to have to deal with it and retake the kick [q.v. ATR 13.3]. If they are yelling at the top of their lungs you have a huge problem because US Soccer has said all will be cautioned and the coach expelled. Next time the match is abandoned, serious problem that.

Regards,
