Question Number: 17763

League Specific 11/8/2007

RE: Rec Under 10

Mike of Chino Hills, CA USA asks...

Okay, simple question. In our AYSO region, the CR will signal to the AR the number of the attacker awarded the goal. Given that the referee only has 10 fingers, what is the proper hand signal for numbers 11 on up (other than wearing open-toed sandals - hehe).

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

I've never heard of or seen this practice used in any soccer match in the world. I have never seen it used in the few AYSO matches I played in or watched.

If this is a local thing, you might like to check with your local folks, because this is not a recognized mechanic that referees use.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Pilots have developed a method of signalling numbers with one hand. We signal one digit at a time. If the hand is vertical the number is indicated by the number of fingers. If the hand is horizontal the number is the number of fingers plus five. That should help if everyone in your league knows the language. Trouble is the assistant doesn't have to know the number, only that a goal is scored. You have the number in your notebook, that's enough.

Regards,
