Question Number: 17771Law 15 - Throw In 11/8/2007RE: Competitive High School Rob of Kensington, CT US asks...How far off the pitch can a flip throw in take a run from? Also, how far can a defender stand from where the throw in is taken place? Thanks, yours in sport. Rob Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney As long as the flip thrower takes the actual throw from within a yard of where it went out, it doesn't really matter how long the run up is - with the caveat that too long a run could be considered a delay of restart. That should elicit a warning first from the referee and a caution upon repeat, although they could legally go straight to caution (not advised). As for the distance the defender must stand, FIFA made a Law change a couple of years ago which says the defenders must be a minimum of 2 yards away from the point where the throw-in is taken. And just a reminder that the Law has told us for many, many years that defenders are not allowed to interfere with the throw-in, and doing so will garner them a caution.
