Question Number: 17776

Law 11 - Offside 11/8/2007

RE: Competitive Adult

Jeff Fox of Tampa, Florida US asks...

I witnessed a game last night and I have a question. Player A shoots the ball. Player B is behind the goalie (off to the side) when the ball is shot. Player A's shot hits off the crossbar and bounces to the far side to Player B who scores the goal. Is this a goal or considered offsides?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Jeff, we need a few more details here.

First, are A and B teammates? If not, there's no offside possible.

Second, we need to know B's positioning relative to the 2nd to last opponent, which might or might not include the goalkeeper.

Third, we need to know B's positioning relative to the ball. If he was not ahead of the ball at the time (supposed teammate) A last touched it, he was not in an offside position.

If you can supply all the answers that put B in an offside position, then the offside call should be made because B has become involved in play by gaining an advantage from his offside position.

By the way, there's no final 's' in offside.
