Question Number: 17783

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 11/8/2007

RE: pro Under 14

hesam of ottawa, canada asks...

can a player from the same team stand a save a goal behind the goalkeeper and if you cant why so can you tell me thanks

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

If you mean he played the ball in a legal way from behind the goalkeeper, then yes, that is legal. Some ways he could do that would be to use his head, his chest, his knee, foot, thigh. However, he cannot use his hands. Only the goalkeeper has that privilege. So if a defensive player is standing behind the goalkeeper, he can play any ball that comes his way except with his hands, arms and tip of his shoulder. If he does that, it is likely to be called a deliberately handled ball and a penalty kick will be awarded against his team. He might even get sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
