Question Number: 17805League Specific 11/9/2007RE: High School sherri stoeffler of tolland, usa asks...can a referee yellow card a coach? I thought that a card could only be given to a player or substitute player- but I watched a ref yellow card a highschool coach today. Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino In USSF/FIFA soccer you are correct!
In High School and College soccer, you are dead wrong! Cards can and are often shown to coaches in High School for a variety of reasons.

Sigh. It's not supposed to be done, but it is an effective tool sometimes for new referees and especially youth referees. You will almost never find a referee graded above the basic grade 8 giving a card to coaches, and the best 8's never will either. The coaches can be sent from the field, and they can have a warning recorded on the game card and in the game report for irresponsible behavior or bringing the game into disrepute.
