Question Number: 17805

League Specific 11/9/2007

RE: High School

sherri stoeffler of tolland, usa asks...

can a referee yellow card a coach?
I thought that a card could only be given to a player or substitute player-
but I watched a ref yellow card a highschool coach today.

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

In USSF/FIFA soccer you are correct!

In High School and College soccer, you are dead wrong! Cards can and are often shown to coaches in High School for a variety of reasons.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Even in some USSF games, you will see cards being given to coaches under local rules and a coach can be forced to miss game(s). Sigh. It's not supposed to be done, but it is an effective tool sometimes for new referees and especially youth referees. You will almost never find a referee graded above the basic grade 8 giving a card to coaches, and the best 8's never will either. The coaches can be sent from the field, and they can have a warning recorded on the game card and in the game report for irresponsible behavior or bringing the game into disrepute.
