Question Number: 17832Law 17 - Corner Kick 11/10/2007RE: Competive Under 14 Joe Manero of Richboro, pa USA asks...Apposing team is setting up for a corner kick. Before the kick a red card is issued to a defending player in the box and the player is sent off. The referee awards a penalty kick. Is a penalty kick the correct call?
Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney No. If the corner kick has not yet been taken, but has been awarded, then that is the restart, regardless of the misconduct (red card here) that followed. Send off stands, restart is corner kick. This game could be protested for misapplication of the Laws of the Game, if the facts as stated are correct.

View Referee Michelle Maloney profileAnswer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer Red cards aren't issued they are shown coach. Play is stopped for specific reasons and the reason play stopped establishes the restart of play, in this case play stopped because the ball crossed the shorter of the two field boundaries having lase been touched by a member of the defending side. The restart of play when that happens is corner kick. Nothing can change that fact.
Well, except maybe a referee who makes up things as he goes along. Careful with that referee because if he doesn't like what you do he will act in accordance with the Law or in accordance with what he thinks is good for the moment and you must do what he decides...
